A new season is blooming, meaning only one thing – the dreaded chore of spring cleaning is looming over all of us. First things first, the closet! The task seems daunting. Over-packed shelves, crowded hangers, items in wrong places. Someone, anyone, HELP! Never fear, the ladies from NEAT Method are here!
Recently, the organizational queens from NEAT showed us how to clean up our act. Devon from @tidyindy, the Indianapolis branch of NEAT Method, supplied six small organizational tips that made a big difference. By following her advice, you can take your closet from an inefficient mess to a beautiful, functioning space.
Here’s what Devon advised:
TIP 1: LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
As you look at your closet, think about what you do daily. Do you make the journey into an office? Are you a fitness junkie that works out every morning? Are you a student heading to classes? Thinking about how you spend your time will help you understand what you wear on daily basis. And where should those items be? Front and center.
TIP 2: CREATE SPACE
Not all of us have the super spacious closet you see in movies. And even if you do, consider packing away your seasonal pieces. Spring is the perfect time to store your sweaters, coats, boots, and outerwear (don’t forget to label!). Storing items seasonally will provide you with the space to see the items you will be wearing this spring.
TIP 3: CATEGORIZE
Categorizing your clothing and accessories will create a clear home for all items in your closet. From the most obvious like hats, scarves, swimwear, to your shirt sleeve length.
TIP 4: TOPS ON TOP, BOTTOMS ON BOTTOM
Just as simple as it sounds! If you have a closet setup that includes top and bottom rods, tops should live on the top and bottoms should live on the bottom.
TIP 5: ROY G BIV
Just like you learned in elementary school. ROY G BIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet) will not only create an aesthetically pleasing closet, but will make your outfit selections a breeze.
TIP 6: LABELING FOR THE WIN
Labeling is the absolute most important detail in not only creating an organized space, but sustaining an organized space! Labeling provides clarity to where each piece belongs and will also make the lovely chore of laundry super simple.
And the finished product…drum roll please….
Wal-lah! A beautiful, organized, functioning closet! A side-effect of an organized closet is having extra space for new items. Time to check out DCB’s new arrivals!
